But, for a desktop pc, a single 16gb stick would be acceptable. I would rather not deal with possible mismatched ram issues.
The two sticks almost always are filled the same way, so if you are using 8GB of RAM, both sticks are holding 4GB, and if you are video editing with 20 chrome tabs open and use 16GB of RAM, both sticks are holding 8GB (probably each half of your footage and 10 chrome tabs).
If you're planning to upgrade in the future to 64 better go for 2 x 8 gb first. If you're not planning to upgrade, than the 4x8 is better than 2x16. Ok thanks I might upgrade in the future but not any time soon, so I will probably will just get the 4 x 8 gb sticks
And of course 13 chrome tabs. I'm using 49% of my 16gb ram. This is pretty 'light' usage. When i had 8gb of ram i also used about 50% under the same loads (so 4gb). It seems windows uses more ram if available. However when i upgraded to 24gb i didnt notice any difference to 16gb, still used around 8gb. So 16gb is the sweet spot for pcs imho.

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-Fe770G that uses the GM945 chipset-- Intel, Sony, AND Crucial say that the maximum amount of RAM is 2GBs of DDR2 (1 GB per SODIMM slot), but I'm running Windows 7 x86 with 3GBs and both the BIOS and Windows report (and presumably map) all 3072MBs.
